Here we are, two weeks into college basketball season and already we have some major upsets going on. I'm not going to turn this into a rant against the big programs who lost a game in the preseason. Sure, that sucks for them but I've got a bigger turkey to fry.

You know what really grinds my gears? Preseason rankings. I mean, seriously, it's just ridiculous. Sure I can see where Florida should be ranked #1. National champs, returning everyone, clearly they deserve #1. But in all reality, most other teams in the nation are going to be much different this year than last. Or perhaps last year they were a "pretty good" team with lots of young players who are expected to step up more this year, cough kansas cough cough. Some people have preseason rankings released immediately after they know who is going the NBA draft. Some wait until a week or 2 before the season starts. But they're all wrong. They all end up having bigtime upsets early in the season.

So, why not just wait a few weeks into the season before coming out with rankings? It makes sense, you can't really rank what you don't know and you don't know anything about most of these teams until they've played some games.

*I will tell you why they put out these worthless rankings my GU friend. The reason: TV, $$$ and ESPN. What on earth would they do without being able to say #5 vs. blah blah, #15 vs. who cares, and then when they get the early ranked vs. ranked...ooh boy! Money for them. Plus, like you wrote about...a "ranked" team who may actually suck in reality get beat by a no name, who is actually decent makes news all over.

Pre-Season rankings are almost as stupid as Joe Lunardi's 1st week of the season Bracketology. That is just so stupid, this guy gets REALLY bored during the off months. I bet you he sits in his ESPN office all summer/Fall and plays his own bracket senerios over and over again. PS. He always wins his bracket pool (with himself). -RD
